Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to take over a well-run, successful, multi-million dollar company and lead it as if it were your own business. In this hands-on role you will interact extensively with the entire team, enjoying the satisfaction of being directly involved in all aspects of our success. You'll assume leadership of a solid group in a positive, family-oriented culture marked by pride and commitment. Your success leading Mastermark could set you up to expand your responsibilities and move up in our parent company, Schwaab, Inc.

You'll oversee all areas of Mastermark's operations, investing the majority of your time in developing bids, managing your people, coordinating with sales, and responding to issues that arise. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will need a significant operations management background, including experience in custom product industries and bidding custom jobs. We're looking for a high energy professional with cost accounting knowledge, budgeting experience, and financial savvy. You also will need a results oriented leadership style that strikes the right balance between assertiveness and ensuring our people continue to feel valued and respected.

Since 1902, Mastermark and its associated companies have had an ongoing goal of providing outstanding service and delivering quality marking products (stamps, signage, and more) at competitive prices. Mastermark employs about 36 people in Kent, WA, and GB Products International employs 8 in Concord, CA. Schwaab, Inc, a leading supplier of hand stamps, name badges/nameplates, indoor signage, acrylics, and business cards in the US, has been family owned and operated since 1881.

PLEASE NOTE: All resumes must be submitted via this system for consideration. Do not contact Mastermark directly or come to our offices to submit a resume. Doing so will negatively impact your status as a potential candidate for this position. Thank you.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in operations management, although we may consider candidates with fewer years of experience as long as they have proven track records. In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:

What's in It for You

Autonomy and support -- you'll report directly to the President of Schwaab, Inc, and he'll see the relationship as if you were the CEO of Mastermark and he is the Board. He'll provide input on strategic decisions, but otherwise you'll run the show. In addition, the incumbent will stay long enough to get you up to speed and set you up for success.

Make a good thing even better -- Mastermark is successful and stable, and the employees are competent and well trained. At the same time, there is always room for improvement, and you'll be able to make an impact by identifying opportunities to improve, including staying up to date with technology.

Great work environment -- we have taken a proactive approach to promoting a positive environment, ensuring that our people take pride in their contributions and enjoy coming to work. We'll look to you to continue in this tradition, including hosting holiday parties, summer family picnics, and more.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a generous salary and bonus potential, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

The Mastermark facility in Kent includes four outside Account Representatives, a Customer Service Manager and five Customer Service Representatives, a Large Accounts Manager, two in Accounting, a Typesetter, Graphic Artist, and the production crew. We are prepared to augment either the sales or manufacturing side to complement your strengths. This facility handles both manufacturing and sales of hand stamps, daters, corporate and notary embossers and stamps, signage, screen-printing, and inkpads and accessories.

GB Products is primarily a sales facility although they also manufacture specialty products such as acrylic display holders and endorser die stamps. The staff includes an Office Manager, Inside and Outside Account Representatives, and a small production crew.

Both businesses focus on B2B sales and the majority of those sales come from in-person selling and relationships. In both locations the staff is strong; we do all our own training and therefore pay careful attention to retaining our people.

For your part you will focus largely on operations and sales. Right off the bat we'll expect you to get to know our operations and understand what you've got. We anticipate that one of your biggest challenges will be getting a handle on bidding, becoming familiar with all the "moving parts" involved. Down the road, of course, we'll look to you to build on the companies' strengths to drive improvements. One area in which you will make an impact is implementing technology to automate processes, including integrating information systems -- a strong plus in a business involving lots of smaller-dollar products.

From week to week you'll probably invest about 30% of your time in developing bids and managing relationships with customers, particularly strategic accounts. Another 25% of your time will go to managing your people and the operations. You'll spend another 30% coordinating with sales to ensure everyone is moving in the appropriate direction, and you'll spend the balance of your time responding to issues that arise.

Because Schwaab has seven manufacturing locations, you will become part of a team of accomplished colleagues sharing insights and ideas.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will have a leadership style that helps cultivate our positive, family-style environment. You'll get to know your people well and understand when to make someone toe the line and when to cut them some slack. In addition, in order to be an outstanding General Manager, you will: If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!

Who We Are

Mastermark has a reputation for quality and service that reaches back more than 100 years. The company was family owned until 2001, when it became part of Schwaab, Inc. Schwaab is the world's leader in custom pre-inked stamps and marking products, and the industry's innovator in the use of materials that last longer, work better, and deliver top value. We manufacture a full line of stamps with distribution in all business-to-business market segments.
